What is SNOMED CT NRC(National Release Center)?

It means the designation of the center at the national level for the smooth dissemination and spread of the SNOMED CT by SNOMED International, which is the managing authority of the Systematised Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT).

Purpose

SNOMED CT-based health care data standardization ensures decision-making support and continuity of treatment, and promotes the use of SNOMED CT in medical institutions such as health care data-centered hospitals so that it can be used for research.

All domestic medical institutions can use the system freely without individual subscription to SNOMED International and additional fees.

Major content

(Role) SNOMED CT NRC plays a role in distributing national-level licenses on behalf of member countries, as well as managing licenses for each institution, vocabulary education and training, and discovering fields of application and is in charge of the spread of SNOMED CT of the country.

(Current state of SNOMED CT)

  • It is an international standard medical terminology system systematized by hierarchy and relationship focusing on the concept. It effectively records and utilizes data in clinical trials for the purpose of improving patient care in major countries around the world such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
  • SNOMED CT is a terminology system that includes terms in many fields of medical information, not specific fields, and is currently used in 80 countries as a term description system that can express relationships.

NRC (National Release Center) serves as a bridge between the IHTSDO headquarters, domestic users, and NRCs in other countries.

Expected effects

  1. Expected to vitalize international standard data based health care research and healthcare service by using standard terms in various fields such as medical institutions, healthcare companies and academic societies

  2. Establishing a standard data set of medical institutions to establish a foundation for not only exchange of domestic medical information but also exchange of health care big data between countries

  3. Using it as an opportunity for Korea to exchange and cooperate with member countries for health care standardization, and to become one of the leading countries in health care standardization around the world
